Thanksgiving Day 2020
The Newport Plain Talk
Newport, Tennessee

To Ronny and Willie Hartsell

Mom and Dad,

This year, with all its challenges, has certainly lived up to its namesake: 2020. Friends have shown their true colors and severed ties for various reasons. Likewise, family members have finally expressed feelings they have kept hidden, eroding strong bonds we thought were stronger. The government has revealed to us that, even after centuries of hard work, it is just as fragile as it was on day-one. And our country has proven that: yes, anyone can be president; yes, swamps can be drained; and yes, we can survive the consequences of both as one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. You taught me that. And for that and so much more, I am truly thankful.

You taught me the importance of an education. And you paved the way for me to accomplish that education and more, even though it meant losing your only son as you knew him. You taught me the value of love of country, and, unknowingly, prepared me for a life overseas where, as a civilian, I defended our country daily.

You taught me what it means to be truly humble, and reminded me that, regardless of my education, my travels, and my accumulated wisdom, I can still learn from any culture I am in--even the very culture that started this precious journey.

You taught me that the only mentor who truly has my back is God. And you warned me that by committing fully to “Where thou leads, I will follow” I had better be ready for the tough challenges I’d face. You weren’t kidding on that one! I have faced some doozies, and I am relieved and happy to report, you were correct--my mentor stayed by my side every step of the way and has truly had my back.

Mom and Dad, you taught me so many things, but most of all, you showed me love. And this letter is a humble note of thanks for without these priceless gifts from you, I wouldn’t be here today. Though COVID keeps us apart this Thanksgiving, know that what I am truly thankful for is you. I love you, Mom and Dad!

Thank you,

Little Ronny
